People have been throwing around the ‘Freedom’ word a lot lately, i.e. in relation to letting Nazis have their speech, etc. etc.

Now let’s talk about some Freedom that actually matters:

  1. Perhaps the three largest issues of individual freedom in the US this past decade have been abortion, gay marriage, and the government’s power to torture. I have little patience for those who make “freedom” into a shibboleth, while fighting against it on the seminal issues.

  2. Freedom, according to many on the right, includes the right to buy hazardous products, contaminated food, and to be treated like dirt as you work yourself to death making a wage that won’t keep you fed, clothed or housed. Freedom for the ‘job creator’ is the ability to screw workers over. Freedom for the worker is the right to take the raw deal, or lay down and die.

  3. For some reason “freedom” often seems to mean “my right to make you do things my way!
