Truvada is already FDA-approved for the treatment of HIV infections. That means physicians are free to prescribe it “off label” for prevention of HIV; reports indicate some already do.

However, if the FDA approves Truvada for prevention, the company that makes the drug, Gilead Sciences, Inc., would be free to market the drug for that use.

Pfft. Some drugs seem to sell far better as off-label prescriptions than they ever did for their purported original intended use. Hopefully, though, an approval would make more prescribing doctors aware of the drug, or make them more inclined to offer it.

Regardless, I hope it is effective and the people who can benefit from its use have access to it.
