  1. 17% of the fed budget goes to defense? Maybe my calculator is broken, everyone else get the same numbers?

FY11 Total Spending 3833.9 (billion) Total Defense Spending 928.5 or 24.2%

How about 2013, with all this budget cut talk and all…

FY13 Total Spending 3603.1 Total Defense Spending 878.5 or 24.3%

Without getting into the rhetoric of cut this or spend that, the 17% figure is just not true…right?

And I doubt someone as politically savvy as Butt sex byproduct would allow an n word gaff. Love em or hate’m he’s whippin up some real frothy numbers when you take campaign spending into consideration…dammit.

  2. @Craig (#4) – Actually, you do need to add interest from the past wars…anywhere from a little over $100 billion to about $430 billion (depends on how much of the interest is applied to past wars…you can make a case for anything in-between).

So, actually, anywhere from 26.9% to 36.9% percent of the federal budget goes to defense for 2012.

Absolutely no idea how to torture the numbers to come up with 17%.

  3. Yeah, the sentence leading up to whatever word he was going to use doesn’t really make sense with the N-word. What’s a government n*$!ah?

On the other hand, not sure what other word you could put there, or what other word Rick would run from. Maybe he was being a creative racist.

  4. The anti-governmentnik. Just like ‘peacenik’ or ‘beatnik’. Or so I look forward to the Frothnik trying to claim:-)

  5. Seen a few different clips of this, and I’m not sure what was going on. I am quite sure a person from western Pennsylvania is a lot more likely to say the n-word than a person from a major urban area in the South, you gotta watch yourself down here.

Even so, I’ve pretty much decided to vote Santorum in the Texas primary. We have semi-open primaries here and 1/3rd of the delegates are decided by obscure caucuses held in remote locations on primary nights. I actually went to one of these caucuses in 2008 and tipped Texas to Obama in delegate count even though Clinton had won the primary. It was amazing. The Clinton people knew what was going on, followed parlimentary procedure, and were quite orderly. We Obama backers were clueless, but we has a 3 to one edge in numbers. We decided that we would pull names out of a hat, but before you could put your name in the hat, you got grilled by the sole Obama organizer at the caucus to make sure you really would show up at the county convention. The Obama campaign called it the “Texas Two Step”, which is the name of a type of jazz-influenced western swing music from the 1940s and one of our lottery games.

But I think I’ll skip that this year. Randall Terry pretty much has nothing against Obama locally, so I’ll go Republican this time, and go to the caucus too. Whoa, I get two votes for Santorum. Mr. Frothy probably is as badly prepared for Texas as he was for Ohio, but I wanna see Frothy make the kind of Buchannan style “kulturkampf” speech that took down GHW Bush in 1992.

But what if I’m wrong and it looks like Frothy might win? I’m getting a big rifle and going to target practice. It would be the only way to live down my shame.

  6. I watched that video second by second. At first I thought maybe someone cut something out, but nothing was cut out. It sure sounded like he was about to call Obama an anti-government N-R. I think the N word could have fit in his statement easily and Santorum just got lucky that he caught it in time.

Somehow I got on Santorum’s email list. I have no idea how that happened. I started wondering if it was spam oriented. Well, I got one that said ‘Thank you for your donation.’ and that was a dead giveaway as I would never donate any money to him. Now he goes right to my spam folder!

  7. “Did Rick Santorum just call President Obama by the “N-word”?”

    Short answer – no.

But it seemed like he came close before he stopped himself.

Rick the santorum is a political “shooting star” that is petering out fast now. A particularly disgusting metaphorical meteor of disgusting smelly composition and small size and that has breifly streaked across our skies, illuminating something of the vast darkness out of which it has come and which it has left behind before hissing, frothing, burning and fizzling out still far from landing on planet Earth.

Obama now seems a shoe-in for Presidentcy term II and Mittens Rmoney is surely (98% now?) going to be his defeated opponent as has been so very predictable all along.

Its just going to take us a long time and a lot of dreary campaigning to get where we pretty much all know we’re going. Isn’t there some sort of electoral “mercy law” that says, “yeah, we know what the election outcome is going to very clearly be – we’ll just accept it as done and skip the nonsnese in-beween” and just announce Obama is Pres still, Mittens got to be runner-up and enough already? If not there kinda needs to be.

PS. Wish there was a quicker, shorter video of this close call with the N-bomb – even though I went straight to it.

  8. No transcipt here that I can see here, Greg Laden.

Oh well, will have to be content with my ears, deaf as they are.

  9. @Katherine Lorraine, Chaton de la Mort :

I don’t think he did say it or was going to say it, but regardless: Anti-war? What? Obama is anti-war?! I wish he was.

FWIW, I think Santorum that is santorum was referring to *candidate* Obama as anti-war not necessarily what he’s turned out to be as President. Which certainly isn’t *that* pro-war anyhow.

BTW. I’m no fan of Obama’s at all or pacifist. There is sometimes, sadly, a need for war. We need to be careful and sober about it and not jump into war lightly but, sometimes, war *is* the least worst option.

PS. Did I hear something about “..following Skywalkers’s lead” there? (46 minutes 25 secs mark.) Hah! Didn’t know Santorum was secretly a Jedi!

  10. itzac:
Government “Boy” is a perjorative on the order of House “Boy”, meaning someone who gets special, undeserved, treatment. cf “Welfare Queen”.

  11. .. following Skywalker’s lead … Didn’t know Santorum was secretly a Jedi!

Can’t listen at this computer, but if true, that must be Anakin, not Luke. Santorum only wishes he were competent enough to be a Sith Lord.

  12. If this were a one off, I’d blink twice and give him the benefit of the doubt. This isn’t the first time he caught himself in reflexive bigotry. c.f. blaaaaa… people
