You don't want Jim Matheson out of office. His vote on healthcare rankled the shit out of me, but he is the only thing between us and yet another Tea Party Republican (as in the 2010 midterm, it was between him and Morgan Philpot, a Tea Party candidate). It's a least of evils situation. We need him in that seat for the same reason that we need to vote for Obama.

As for finding a non-"Blue Dog" Democrat, that is a non-starter in this state. Matheson is the only Democrat with clout here, and any competition from his own party would put another Tea Partier in power and pave the way for a long-term all-Republican representation from Utah.

I don't like it any more than you do -- but while I live in his district, I'm voting for Matheson until the Utah Democratic Party grows a pair.

That would be correct, Martin.

Strategically, we might be better off accepting less that perfect voting on the part of our representatives rather than dumping them because they voted on the wrong side of a pet issue, no matter how important that issue is. Striving for purity is a great recipe for irrelevance, which I'm hoping is going to bite the republicans in the ass this election cycle. If the dems start playing the same game, they're going to get screwed.

I'd certainly like to see it happen but I doubt that it will. Certainly in the case of Rick Boucher (Va) he voted against health care because in right-of-center Virginia he would be punished by his constituents if he voted for it. As a matter of pragmatism I'll settle for a rep. who votes liberal sometimes rather than for a rep. who votes far-right all the time.
