How much of that is actually related to any specific holiday around the Winter Solstice?

My playlist would consist of Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque Christmas music, just to shake things up without detracting from the spirit of the season. Yes, they're mostly Christian, but at least they remind us that Christmas/Solstice/Saturnalia/whatever is about more than just prezzies and fake good cheer.

Seriously, anything is better than the loud, empty crap they play to bring out those fake smiles and extra dollars. One of the worst is "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year." Seriously? It's WINTER, and a big Solstice feast is just a way of preparing for the LEAST wonderful time of the year. Why would I want to listen to some idiot saying how wonderful it is to hear other morons "telling you, be of good cheer?"

Then there's "Baby's First Christmas," which, thankfully, seems to horriffic even for the most callous mall management.
