Great article. I didn't know about that the historic side of things there with frozen US harbours and the issue going back to the days of steam trains (<i>& before? Trying to synchronise my impressions of history.</i>) Interesting stuff helping add a newer perspective again. Thanks.

I may have to bookmark and link / forward this to afew people and places.

BTW. Have you seen this Youtube item on the 2011 arctic ice melt :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRc_9nNTZg0&list=PL029130BFDC78FA33&index=1

which is part of a superb, entertaining and informative series debunking the Climate Contrarian canards?

(Whole playlist for that can be found here :

http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=029130BFDC78FA33

if folks want to see more. One of my favourite resources for the Human Induced Rapid Global Overheating (HIRGO)* issue.

-----

* Because "Anthropogenic Global Warming" isn't a sufficently clear and good description in my view. 'Anthropogenic' is a technical "weasel word" where Human Induced is more starkly clear plus "warming" is too mild for what is happening to our planet and has too many positive pyschological associations for an issue that we need to be seriously concerned about.

One of the important national defense implicationf of the north polar ice cap is the noise that all that moving ice generated. That noise tended to obscure any noise that nuclear submarines made and also provided various reflective surfaces to make active sonar less effective.

If this was the 1960's, the eventual melting of the north polar ice cap would have been taken as a serious military threat and actions would have been taken to prevent it from happening.

A friend of mine is a skydiver who has participated in at least one North Pole skydive and has attempted at least one South Pole skydive (technically more challenging, as it is a high-altitude dive). They don't do North Pole sky dives any more: during summer there's not enough sea ice cover.
