Yeah, there was the semester at school, just after Christmas, when I looked at the schedule for my retail job and saw zero hours scheduled for the week. Was I fired, I asked. No, there just weren't enough hours to give you any, said the manager. We'll call you when we need you to come in.

In order to pay my rent, I had to borrow. There wasn't any money left for toilet paper. I stole some from my roommates, I stole some every day from school. Food? I'd hang around with people ordering pizza in case there was an extra piece, I'd go to church with friends in order to get coffee and cookies or the occasional pot luck. I didn't know how to ask for assistance. I'd never had to do it and I honestly wasn't aware I could.

Mike's Submarines and NEBA Roast Beef! - near Central and Colvin.
Growing up Delmar in the '70s, and visiting Albany all the time (my Dad worked up the street) I remember them well - a similar parallel universe.

Too bad they're long gone - it's a Jiffy Lube or something, nowadays (better than a Subway's, at least).

At college over the summer, I worked in the library and lived in the dorms but there was no food service available from May - September. I was dead broke. Fortunately, the college hosted many conferences throughout the summer and I would pretend to be part of the janitorial staff as the meeting ended so I could have 1st dibs on all the conference food left over. I lived on pickles, sliced cheese and cold ham and turkey that summer.
