Greg Laden: Add a liberal third party candidate ... someone who can play on all this whinging about how Obama has done nothing ... and 5 or 10 percent of the vote gets split out. Assuming you don't also have a Conservative fourth party candidate, to give a familiar recipe. US Civil War probably would only annihilate US civilization; the economic collapse would grossly inconvenience the rest of the planet, but probably not end civilization outright.

"End of civilization right there." probably not, because the "spoiler" candidate would be only presidential. since that candidate would attract those obama-disenfranchised voters to the booth, they'd vote for congresscritters who wouldn't be repug. IOW, pushing congress further from repug.

Michele Bachmann is in Iowa as we speak. In a head to head with Obama, she gets 32 percent of the national vote.

Add a liberal third party candidate … someone who can play on all this whinging about how Obama has done nothing … and 5 or 10 percent of the vote gets split out. Blacks stay home, teabaggers show up. You’ve got X in the white house, where X = some combination of Bachmann, Palin and Huckabee.

End of civilization right there.
