We tried this style of public housing in Ireland – on a much smaller scale obviously – and it was also a complete failure.

The solution is the same too; demolition and building human scale housing

I remember Cabrini-Green because Jane Byrne chose to live there for a year when she was mayor of Chicago. I am not sure if that was before or after your father’s visit. Also, I think the producers of “Good Times” used Cabrini-Green for the exteriors.

Some were relocated to other housing sites in different parts of the state as well. Danville, Champaign, Peoria, Moline, Carbondale and Springfield all helped house families affected by the closing.

@ #1 To heck with WalMart — that property is too valuable, even with the El running right thru it! C-G is located just to the west of the Streeterville / Mag Mile area. It is about a 20 minute walk from the “Water Tower” intersection of N. Michigan Ave & Chicago Ave to the location of these tenements.

I hope the people who have been moved out have been able to find themselves some better circumstances, altho I wonder if mixed income housing is all that it’s cracked up to be.

But where are those people now? Were they bussed to Phoenix so Chicago can sell the property to Wal-Mart?
