For HHH fans, I suggest you check out the documentary Hubert H. Humphrey: The Art of the Possible which is in the rotation on PBS. For HHH fans in the Twin Cities you should go over to the Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs on the West Bank Campus at the U and check out the Humphrey Centennial Exhibits they have in the lobby.

Emerson, what are you talking about? Is there some sort of prescribed thing I’m supposed to be doing here, some explicitly defined form of essay or flavor of journalism, and I’ve violated the expectations?

Other than telling me that the fact that I express a considered opinion worries you, do you have something substantive to say about the post?

Oh, and I voted fro Dayton, supported him, I’m glad he won, hope the recount does not reverse that, and there is really very little I’ve said in this essay that expresses any of that. If anything, I’m telling people to vote for Hubert Humphrey!

I find the tone of most recount articles to be rather worrysome. This article, and those produced here in Alaska from Joe Miller supporters, have a lot of good reasons to vote for the person mixed in. The voting is over, and we should not be voting with legal influence. The person who more people voted for should win, even if they are total slime balls, that’s part and parcel to democracy.

Excellent synopsis of the DFL history. As a fellow Minnesotan, I’ve been proud of our blue state. Lately, though, it’s getting to be tough sledding (no, not a weather reference!). A Dem governor and Repub house/senate is going to be very hard on us, especially since the Repubs are so batshit crazy. Again, thanks for a good post.

Far from Minnesota, I’d always heard that HHH’s breakthrough accomplishment was in melding pro-union politics with strident anti-communism and thereby endearing himself simultaneously to a blue-collar electorate and the military-industrial complex.

Only one of those has nationwide political significance any more.

As for your soon-to-be-ex governor, should the ‘Pubs nominate a southerner in ’12, he (not likely she)’ll need a counterweight from the north – but not too far north, if ya know what I mean. If TP cultivates a reputation for obedience, he might still strut across the national stage.
