John Belushi–a great Chicagoan…along with Nelson Algren (adopted Chicagoan) and Studs Terkel (also claimed Chicago as his adopted city)…Jim Belushi–a citizen of Chicago, nothing more, nothing less.

@Cynthia: You mean John Belushi, “Jim” is his brother James.

Personally I prefer the auditions of Phil Hartman and Will Ferrell. This wasn’t one of John Belushi’s best.

I landed in LA from Londing in November 1975. I had never seen American TV before so I thought SNL was just how it was – great! – oh, maybe not .. etc.

The first cast were the rule breakers, the rule makers, for all that followed in SNL. A big part of the problem that all the cast who followed the first act was that they had to follow that act. Yes, SNL continues to foster some great comedians – take Tina Fey today for example – but the rules that made SNL are still in effect, there have been no new rule breakers.

Some great lines:

Jane Curtain – “This is for you, Tom!”

Lorraine Newman – “You make me wet!”

and of course the ones that made it into the language

“but Nooooooo”
“Never Mind”

many more but I’m at work so have to stop now.

I really miss Gilda.

I was 13 snl’s first season. We never knew just how talented and intelligent the whole cast was. Haven’t seen anyone come near to their level of just plain FUNNY! Probably never will!

I watched the first episode with My cousin Kenny, I was 8 years old and for the next four years while my cousin Kenny was in Chicago University, we would watch SNL before he went home. I forgot how good the original cast was. Thank god for DVDs and this rare view of Jim Belushi, a fellow Chicagoan.
