Iâ??ve come to the conclusion that Rush Limbaugh doesnâ??t actually believe half the things he says, and whether he does or not, for his purposes, is totally beside the point. He has not come to be in the position he now enjoys by making reasonable statements. While I agree with everything Mr. Ebert has said, and while I have no doubt he had the best of intentions, the fact is that the more people react, and the higher the profile of those that do react, the more it benefits Rush Limbaugh and all the more lucrative his contract will be when it comes up for renewal. Sometimes itâ??s best to just ignore him and hope his heart ailment worsens.

Given the scumbags our species has a knack for producing from time to time, it should come as no surprise to anyone that someone as vile as Rush Limbaugh should come along. What I find both troubling and perplexing is why we as a society choose to elevate these wretches to billionaire status. His listeners arenâ??t some lunatic fringe â?? theyâ??re absolutely mainstream. Thatâ??s what keeps me awake nights.

You joke because you are there, but don’t say that based on one dumbass.

Raleigh is actually very nice. And FYI: a lot of very smart people are there. Red Hat Software is based in Raleigh, for example.

Lynn, sometimes Greg’s comments should be taken seriously, other times they should not. Multiple exclamation points are the giveaway.

By the by, I live in the triangle area, and there isn’t anywhere else in NC I’d want to live… except Asheville, maybe. Lots of interesting places and things to do.

@Science Pundit–the question really was directed at Greg as he’s from Minnesota!
I had no idea the conference was here, cool.

He would have flown into the Raleigh-Durham Airport, which is right next to RTP. The Research Triangle Park (RTP) is named for the geometrical triangle made by Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. RTP is right in the middle of it.
RTP (and the universities here) have made the area what it is now–a thriving area of the country, even while the recession raged(s).
I came down here with one of the big IBM waves when my dad was transferred from MD. Back then, in the 70s, there were two types of kids at my school–NC natives and IBMers.

Anyone remember the movie Brainstorm? They used the Borroughs-Wellcome (now Glaxo) building in RTP. Some cool archicture in the area.

RTP (very close to Raleigh) is full of highly educated people–during the day. Many of them actually do live in Raleigh.
Of course, highly educated doesn’t equate to open minded, but it’s a start.
Anyway, check us out–what was your temp up there today, it was 60+ today.

I’ve actually been to RTP and I completely agree with everything you say. It was cold here in Philly today, but not as bone chilling as it has been for the last two weeks. I’m assuming, of course, that that question was directed at me and not Greg Laden who is currently at the ScienceOnline2010 conference in RTP (and I’ll go out on a limb and guess that he flew into Raleigh). 😉

“have to”? yeah, I don’t think anyone is being forced to donate to the red cross via the white house site. what a stupid question. what a stupid, assumption, too. All that link does is prevent idiotic comments a la “why does the president not care?!” if there weren’t a link to some relief organization.

Absolutely nothing seems to be able to prevent stupid comments by Limbaugh & Co. in general, though.
