Being a Massachusetts Ultraliberal, the loss of the avuncular Edward Moore Kennedy leaves a large void in my psyche, the local landscape, and beyond. He was perhaps flawed due to his personal peccadilloes as are we all, however his public persona was beyond reproach. He donated his Senatorâ??s salary to charity and because he had enough wealth to sustain his requirements, he was not tempted by lobbyistsâ?? importuning and bribes. He was secure enough in his ideals and seat (Mitt Romney was the only serious contender to challenge him and lost by 17%) to vote his conscience no matter how unpopular with his colleagues or party.

My daughter was a volunteer for the Mass Democratic Party in the 1990â??s and was invited to his victory celebration. She got to briefly speak with him and told him that she was considering a career in Political Science and had hopes of attending Georgetown University. He told her when she got to Washington to contact his office and he would get her a job around the Senate if needed. She didnâ??t end up going to college but continued to work for the Democrats and when John Tierney was elected a couple of years later, at his celebration, she again ran into Ted who remembered her (without prompting she said) and asked about Georgetown and whether she was still considering Politics as a vocation. She said she was still politically active but had opted for a Software career.

His attention to detail, common touch, and his belief in Tip O'Neill's dictum "All politics is local" were what endeared him to all who were touched by his generosity of spirit and his humanity. I will miss his fire and spirit immensely as will our state and my eyes are welling up just writing this.

RIP EMK

Well, not the Strom Thurmond right, but gee wizzers--Ted hated censorship!

I'm not censoring anyone. I'm just asking people to not be disrespectful in this particular context.

I recommend making anti-Kennedy comments here:

... where they will be welcomed as free speech, analyzed, and quite possibly chewed up and spit out.

Greg @"Such comments will be deleted without prejudiced."
Hey, that's a REAL shift to the right!
Well, not the Strom Thurmond right, but gee wizzers--Ted hated censorship!
He said: "Those who favor censorship should recall that one of the first books ever burned was the first English translation of the Bible. As President Eisenhower warned in 1953, â??Donâ??t join the book burners...the right to say ideas, the right to record them, and the right to have them accessible to others is unquestioned -- or this isnâ??t America.â?

Your geography is wrong. Kennedy drove off the bridge on Dyke Road over Poucha Pond, which is on east side of Chappaquiddick, not the west side, the side that faces Martha's Vineyard. Dyke Road goes nowhere, except a beach, and it's little more than a sand track, or at least it was in 1969. Even now, it doesn't look like much on Google Satellite.

Now go ahead and delete this.
