Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds, by Charles Mackay, first published in 1841, chapter 10: The Witch Mania, describes how thousands and thousands of people in Europe were made to confess their crimes of witchcraft through the use of “enhanced interrogation techniques.”
