Carbon dioxide and monoxide are both very deadly toxins that can pollute the air.The green house emissions which give out carbon dioxide should be under scanner surely.The statistics have to studies and then decided whether the levels are scary,you don’t want to breathe bad air and fall sick…do you?

So every time you bury a plastic bag in a landfill, you’re sequestering carbon. Unless it’s one of those biodegradable ones. Biodegradable plastic? Bad idea.

Greg: So it’s the quantity of carbon, not the source, that matters. Banning other sources (adding up to the same quantity) — wood-burning, smoking, large-scale animal breeding — would work just as well.

Frak: Imagine that we were only allowed to burn wood. There would be only a very small greenhouse effect, and it would be limited. Then we make a new rule (because that won’t be enough energy) that says we can burn whatever we want but we must offset the carbon PRIOR to burning the substance, NO EXCEPTIONS.

In that instance, we would be doing almost nothing that we do now. Talk of offsets are cheap. Show me the money.

Greg: How is the carbon released by burning gas chemically different from the same amount of carbon released by burning wood, such that it takes longer for biological uptake (by new trees, etc)?

Longer to go back into oil-well depths as opposed to ground-level plant growth, yes, but that isn’t essential for getting it out of the atmosphere.
