California passed a Safe Cosmetics Act in 2005, which does not ban specific chemicals, but requires cosmetics manufacturers to list ingredients, and allows for CalOSHA to inspect conditions at nail salons and similar businesses.http://www.safecosmetics.org/newsroom/press.cfm?pressReleaseID=13Mercury is just one of many nasty, toxic components that may lurk in US cosmetics.
