Poisoned Ivorians reject payout
Published by Greg June 24th, 2007Victims of last year’s toxic waste scandal in Ivory Coast have rejected the government’s offer of compensation. The families of 16 people who died when the waste was dumped in Abidjan were offered $200,000 (£100,000) each, with smaller sums to thousands who fell ill.
Victims’ groups dismissed the offer as cynical. The amount is less than half the total allocated to the government.
The Dutch company which chartered the vessel said it would pay $198m (£102m) for a clean-up and investigation.
