Wikipedia Saves University Profess Piles Of Work
1 Comment Published by Greg November 3rd, 2007 in EducationI’ve never done this myself, but I’ve been thinking it and talking about it for a long time:
“An inspired professor at University of Washington-Bothell, Martha Groom, made an interesting pedagogical experiment. Instead of vilifying Wikipedia as some academics are prone to do, she assigned the students enrolled in her environmental history course to contribute articles. […]
Controversy over Controversy: Moran disagrees with everybody, but he is probably correct.
2 Comments Published by Greg October 30th, 2007 in Creationism in the Classroom, Evolution v Creationism, Education, Atheism and Religion, Commentary, Creationism, Science EducationLarry Moran has written a post in which he presents an opposite view of what I stated here. My statements merely echo those of the National Center for Science Education, the US. Supreme Court, and others because I believe that the “Teaching of the Controversy” should not be allowed in public school science classrooms. […]
It has become axiomatic that US students are behind students in other countries in math and science, a decreasing number of students engage in these subjects in school, and an insufficient number of US students are graduating with studies in these areas to meet demand.
However, The Urban Institute, a non-partisan think tank with no obvious […]

The following is an abstract from an article by Eugenie Scott of the National Center for Science Education called “WHAT’S WRONG WITH THE “TEACH THE CONTROVERSY” SLOGAN?” available here.
Teachers are often exhorted by creationists to “teach the controversy.” Although such encouragement sounds on the surface like a […]
Creationism In The Classroom
5 Comments Published by Greg October 28th, 2007 in Creationism in the Classroom, Evolution v Creationism, Education, Atheism and Religion, Commentary, Creationism, Science EducationAccording to Randy Moore, who is possibly the nation’s leading expert on law and practice of the Evolution/Creationism struggle:
According to reports from 1,441 undergraduate students at a large, public American university, most high-school biology teachers teach evolution. Approximately 25% of students who attended public schools report that their biology teachers also taught creationism, despite the […]

Creationism in Florida
2 Comments Published by Greg October 23rd, 2007 in Evolution v Creationism, Creationism in the Classroom, Education, Creationism, CommentaryAve , Maria, Florida. “Ave Maria officials have decided it’s time to set the record straight. There’s not going to be a special cable provider that doesn’t carry X-rated channels. The town isn’t going to be a Catholic utopia, where only practicing Catholics are welcome. And no one is dictating what can or, […]
Creationism in Canada
0 Comments Published by Greg October 19th, 2007 in Creationism in the ClassroomFrom the Calgary Herald:
In recent years, creationists have become more aggressive in their attempts to undermine science education. The movement, originating in the U.S., has gained political support in Great Britain and Canada.
The Alberta government has been quietly increasing funding to faith schools — to 100 per cent in the case of “alternative” programs — […]

15 Comments Published by Greg October 9th, 2007 in Education, Presidential Election, Politics, CommentaryAcademics tend to be liberal, this we all know. But it is interesting to contemplate the finer details of this association. When we do so, we discover some interesting differences among different kinds of academics, and one group in particular — “Health Scientists” — can be singled out as bucking the trend. […]
Creationism in the Texas Schools … you may be next
0 Comments Published by Greg October 9th, 2007 in Creationism in the Classroom, EducationThis is from Alternet:
In mid-August, Texas Gov. Rick Perry signed something called the “Religious Viewpoints Antidiscrimination Act” into law. Although the new law has an innocuous-sounding title, it’s really a ticking time-bomb, opponents say.
The law requires every public school in the state to adopt a policy guaranteeing students’ right to religious expression. It mandates that […]
