The GOP Future: Romney Wins In Wisconsin, Santorum Wins in May, Women Walking Away

Romney is expected to win today’s GOP primary in Wisconsin, though a good Santorum showing is not impossible. Romney will also do well in other April races (Connecticut, Delaware, New York and Rhode Island). However, Santorum is expected to do reasonably well in May (Texas, Arkansas, Kentucky, Indiana and West Virginia). Santorum is predicting a nearly even race by the end of that process. We’ll see.

Meantime, in all of the major general election battleground states, Obama is beating the Republicans in head-to-heat polling. However, the two parties are about evenly divided among men, with women very strongly leaning towards the Democratic candidate and away from the Republican candidate.

Apparently several months of crapping on women has its effects.

  1. @ ^ unbound : Yup. It should have occurred to them somewhere along the line that denigrating and attacking a group that makes up more than half the population would probably backfire electorally but it seems they just couldn’t help themselves.

Wonder if the Republicans have learnt their lesson from this and will change their future behaviour to actually oppose sexism now or in future elections or not?

As I said on an older thread here (it seems apt to repeat it here, hope that’s ok.) :

Obama now seems a shoe-in for Presidentcy term II and Mittens Rmoney is surely (98% now?) going to be his defeated opponent as has been so very predictable all along.

Its just going to take us a long time and a lot of dreary campaigning to get where we pretty much all know we’re going.

Isn’t there some sort of electoral “mercy law” that says, “yeah, we know very clearly what the election outcome is going to be – we’ll just accept it as done and skip the nonsense in-between” and just announce Obama is Pres still, Mittens got to be runner-up and enough already? If not, there kinda needs to be.

  2. Months?

It’s been longer than that, but apparently someone inserted a rotary ventilator into the process.

  3. I mean really can anyone really, *honestly* tell me that anyone but Romney is now going to win the R-nom or that Mitt is actually even remotely able to defeat Obama?

I guess the big question now that doesn’t yet have an obvious predictable answer is what happens to Congress and who gets to be the R’s Vice-Presidential nominee? I presume Biden is safe in the job, (right?) but who will Mitt pick as his running mate?

Of course, politics being what it is, I guess it won’t be long before we’re thinking and hearing about the 2016 Presidential campaign will it?

  4. #s 2 and 4 seriously overestimate the stupidity of the American electorate at large. Don’t rest on your laurels–even if Obama isn’t perfect, he’s leagues better than *anyone* running against him. You may not think he deserves a second term, but the country manifestly doesn’t deserve another term of Repubs at the till…not yet. So get out and vote, and convince other people to do likewise.

  5. Of course, politics being what it is, I guess it won’t be long before we’re thinking and hearing about the 2016 Presidential campaign will it?

That may well be what Santorum is thinking of right now. The runner-up to an eventual nominee who loses the general election is commonly seen as the default leader the next time around. Romney is the most recent example.

  6. I don’t think the Republicans thought they were crapping on women. They thought they were “respecting” those little ladies who shouldn’t have to worry their pretty little heads about big important stuff like men do.

  7. “Apparently several months of crapping on women has it’s effects.”

    Imagine that.

I’ll imagine it without the incorrect apostrophe…

  8. Watch, Santorum wins in November. He then gets a “thank you Lord”,big head and then the world ends on Dec 21st.

  9. If Santorum is still viable in May, I may have to vote for him. We need a Republican candidate who is unflagging in the war on women!

  10. The thing that gets me is that Obama was beatable and the Republicans did everything they possibly could to make sure he got a second term.

The Democratic base is women and minorities and you go out of your way to piss off the most numerous.

Unless something strange happens, Obama is going to crush Romney like a bug.

And the 2016 race is going to be interesting. Hillary v Santorum unless the Republican cabal has eaten itself by then.

  11. The issues that the Republican candidates support for party nomination are not those of the majority of Americans. By the time the nomination is sealed it will be too late for Romney. The right don’t want him but will vote for him. Unfortunately for him he needs a majority and he has alienated them to win nomination. The big question now is what we will have in congress.
