Planned Parenthood Raised $3,000,000 in wake of Komen Obnoxiousity

According to an email I just received from Cecile Richards, Planned Parenthood president. Planned Parenthood is grateful and happy for the three million dollars in donations, and also happy that Komen “has clarified its grantmaking criteria” and Planned Parenthood looks “forward to continuing our partnership with Komen partners, leaders, and volunteers. What these past few days have demonstrated is the deep resolve all Americans share in the fight against cancer, and we are proud to be a leading source for women seeking preventive care.”

Bottom line: Planned Parenthood raised about five years worth of Komen Support. My suggestion: If you are like me, you’ll want to see Komen rot and die on the vine. If you are like those namby pampy nice people and want to reward Komen for being absolute dicks and getting called on it, and want to return to running around in circles wearing all sorts of pink shit, then fine, but do consider waiting five years to see what Komen does between now and then.

They still have not totally clarified their policy, the Fundamentalist Christians that seem to have taken over the organization have not resigned, and there is no reason to believe that they won’t do this again.

They pissed of the center and the left. By caving to Planned Parenthood they will now piss off the right. There really isn’t anything they can do effectively at this point.

It really is better if big organizations like this disappear now and then, especially for reasons like this. Keeps everybody else in line. From her eon in nobody is going to let themselves get Komenned very easily.

  1. Three million in three days, I almost want to thank Komen for the exposure, we couldn’t have done it without them.

  2. … the Fundamentalist Christians that seem to have taken over the organization have not resigned, and there is no reason to believe that they won’t do this again.

There is less than none. Take a look at Komen’s reported lobbying expenditures. Komen has spent at least the past decade lobbying against measures that would expand funding for research and access to care, including the public option of the Affordable Care Act.

By caving to Planned Parenthood …

They didn’t cave. They said that all previous grants would be honored and PP was free to apply for another one — not that they would end up getting one. It’s a not-pology. It’s worthless. And there’s no reason to believe that SGK are actually going to change their tune, given their past actions.

This is an eye-opener, not an aberration.

  3. Agreed with tms. Komen’s been so good at being high profile, that they were where a lot of women were turning when thinking about women’s health. But by publicly cutting Planned Parenthood, they obviously made a lot of women think about who REALLY has been there for women’s health, at every stage, without looking down at their clients.

  4. I’m inclined to wonder whether SGK won’t actually use this as an excuse to not renew the PP funding – since PP clearly doesn’t need it any more, now that they’ve raised lots of money from other sources.

  5. “If you are like me, you’ll want to see Komen rot and die on the vine.” I’m thankful for this brouhaha. It forced me to look more closely at their other policies…and the more I looked, the less I liked. They would not have had such close scrutiny had they not made such a clumsy boneheaded move.

  6. Does anyone know what Susan G. Komen thought about this issue of abortion or what her politics were? She was a real person right?

  7. She was a real person. I have been wondering the same thing. I assume she was not in favor of letting poor women twist in the wind, but who knows, maybe she was a full time one percenter.
