  1. For another account of this incident, see the book by a Soviet ambassador who defected to the United States – Breaking with Moscow, by Arkady Shevchenko. He was a a member of the Soviet delegation at the time.

Without rechecking it I cannot be sure, but I thought the shoe-banging was directed at a Spanish representative.

  2. It may seem absurd, but Kruschev was one of the “good guys” of this era in the Soviet Union.
After the Cuba crisis, he understood the need for reducing the number of nuclear weapons. If he had been left in power another couple of years, we could have had an agreement about this a quarter century earlier. He was replaced by the usual gang of communist thugs, and we had to wait for Gorbachev…
(from a Scandinavian viewpoint, he was a good neighbour to Finland, who got back some territories lost in the Winter war. When he was overthrown he was about to give back Viborg, the second largest town of Finland. The chance was lost, and now Viborg will probably remain Russian for the foreseeable future)
