  1. Interesting, though other approaches are also in the pipeline http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-10790259 though as the BBC reports the scaffold approach may not be suitible for older patients. It may however be more useful for younger patients who otherwise face operations every 10-15 years to have metal joints replaced.

    It’s a fast moving area, and perhaps stem cell transplants and ex vivo growth on a scaffold might speed up recovery time after operations. It’s certainly an approach that is showing promise in other areas, for example in building arteries, tracheas and more recently lung tissue http://speakingofresearch.com/2010/06/25/how-to-build-a-lung/
