Let us not let the death of Ed McMahon and some other stars overshadow the anniversary of the death of one of the greats. In memoriam, let’s talk bullshit:

  1. We seem to have lost a lot of names this past year. Carlin perhaps one of those to be missed most – up to the very end he never missed a line, muffed a cutting social observation, or even slowed down much. And Farah was my introduction to Los Angeles – she and the original SNL were coincident to my arrival here.

But there have been some personal losses also. I mentioned my dog-cat Madison in my last comment on Cats or Dogs. For the past 9 months we have been fighting a toxic kidney failure. Last week he was diagnosed with cancer of the intestinal lymph nodes. He had lost so much substance, robustness, and even self, there was no way he could survive any extreme measures, so on Friday we had the vet visit us and we together put him to sleep. The way he relaxed into the first soporific injection was a clear thankyou.

Why dog-cat? He was 22 lbs, length went across my hips and down to my knee, walked over (no need to jump) pretty much any other cat, and was bigger than many dogs I know. Weight was skeletal size, not fat. He also suffered from separation anxiety when I left home for any length of time, only purred when I was home, and would gaze into my eyes with dog-like devotion for hours at a time. Not your normal cat.

15 years my constant companion. RIP Madison.

  2. Thanks, Greg. Had a couple days to mourn now. And update his blog, not that I ever did much with it, but sometimes that is what happens.

If interested, see here (http://blog.merklecat.net/) his recent history and healthy pics. Yes, he’s a cat, but with some Panther.
